War Memorial Exhibtion
The Auckland Museum is mainly about War Memorial.Infact the museum is actually called The Auckland War Memorial Museum.Anyway the musuem has alot to do with war there.There are mumerous lectures,tours and events to do with the war.There are galleries in the museum with lists on man and women who served in the war engraved on plaque.There are over 1300 names on the walls.There's also a exbition called 'Scars On The Heart' which is about the Holocaust,Anglo-Boer 19 century war,WW1 & WW2.The exhibtion was created using using the personal experinces of the armed forces and the NZers whom remained at home.Letting these voices speak makes this collection even more historical.The items are small but signaficant.There's things like:letters,photographs and articles of clothing.Its a very historic feature,that you will never forget.Also to do with war at the Museum,there is a Holocaust Gallery.Over 6 million Jewish people were killed in the Holocaust.This emotional gallery was made possible by the Auckland/Hebrew public.It tells the story of the Holocoust through photos,letters and articles.Jewish refugees who espaced to New Zealand also tell their emotional stories about the terror,the camps,the soliders and how every minute they feared for their lives.The bricks in this gallery are from the Warsaw Ghetto.
Maori Culture And History
Maori culture has been apart of NZ History for years and years.That's why its so important to remember all the Maori culture that has happened and been passed down from generation to generation.For 1500 years the museum has protected and cared for precious Maori toanga and treasures and they are still in prime condition.The buildings and exhibtions within the Maori Exhibtions repersents the history of two people's working together, and creating history together.There is a number of full-sized buildings in the gallery,such as Hotuni,the meeting house that was orgianally a wedding present.There are also lots of artifacts there including cloaks,weapons and flax weaven baskets.It is a breath-taking sight to see all these Maori artifacts,perserved in time.There's also Maori Culture Preformances (3x daily).Afterwards you can talk,ask questions and take photos with the preformers.If you go to the museum,one thing you have too see is the Maori exhibtion !
Educational Stuff
At the museum there is lots for kids to do such as,competions to name the rats at the Museum.You can also come and visit the museum with your school for a fun day out ! There's also an video-making competion to make the best videoand you can win lots of fun prizes! There is an exhibtion called The Werid And Wonderful which is brillant for children and ten,it has lots of cute animals for you to look at and there are many other activites for you to do there like:Study yucky coachroaches,exmaine tanks filled to the brink with slimy,sea creatures,open drawers to discover fossils,mammals,mousces,bug and birds! You can even touch a REAL elephants tooth if your up for it !
Collections And Research
At the museum there's a spatacular Pictorial Collection with photographs,prints,drawing,maps,posters and paintings.Some of the photos are extremely amazing such as the Robin Morrison Collection which have several wonderful paintings.There are certain themess which recur in his photos,such as:backyards,porches and living rooms.There is four photos in the museum by him and they are all a great addition to the museum and its collections.
