railway stations

  • Railway construction in auckland began in 1863

  • The railway station enterprise did not really begin intill 1872 when the contract was appoved to build a main railway station in Auckland
  • In 1872 there were less than 100 miles of railway open for traffic in the whole country. The population of Auckland city and environs was only about 25,000. Today our railway system has a length of 3,287 miles and the population of Auckland is 212,100.

Cars

  • Motor vehicles have changed Auckland life for over 110 years
  • They have reduced the travelling time between places by nearly half
  • Only the very ritch could aford cars in 1900
  • They made farm areas easier to get to and changed the landscapes of New Zealand.
  • however cars also made crime easier,including night-time disturbance and danger, and contributed to ozone depletion.
  • cars have been one of the main influences of 20th century life, in Auckland and everywhere else.

Airport

  • The site of the airport was first used as an airfield by the Auckland Areo Club
  • In 1960 work started to transform the site into Auckland's main airport
  • most of the runway is on land reclaimed from the Manukau Harbour.
  • The first flight to leave was an Air New Zealand DC-8 in November 1965, to Syndey.
  • The airport was opened the next year, with a grand air pageant on Auckland Anniversary weekend, 29 January to 31 January 1966.
